Calgary set to host 2019 Canadian Mixed Doubles Championships

2019-04-24

OTTAWA, ON, April 23, 2019 – The second largest Canadian Mixed Doubles Championships in history is set to begin later this week (April 25-28) in Calgary, Alberta with 61 teams setting their sights on capturing a National Title.  The Calgary Winter Club will play host with the support of the Glencoe Club and World Health Club – Edgemont as they feature categories in Open, B, 40+, 50+, 55+ and 60+.

To put this event into perspective, it will be all hands-on deck with 122 participants to ensure everything goes smoothly.  As Tournament Co-Chair Jack Hoogstraten stated, “Originally, we set 60 teams as a lofty goal and we got 61!  Yikes, and only three courts, since one is out for flood repair.  We have strong out of town participation from Edmonton, British Columbia, Ontario and several US cities.  We are looking forward to a very competitive and fun event for all!”

The 2019 event will certainly highlight the “past, present and future” of mixed doubles squash.  In the Open category the “present” day stars of mixed doubles will see the return of 2017 National Champions Stephanie and Jamie Hewitt as number one seeds along with 2018 National Champion Stephanie Edmison with new partner Eric Watson as number two seeds.  These pairs will be highly contested by six other top teams aiming to win their first National Title.

The “future” shines brightly in the B category as some of Canada’s top junior athletes try their hand at mixed doubles in a field of 14 teams.  Of the four teams made up of juniors, the group is headlined by Jana Dweek who recently captured the Girls U15 National Championship.  She will partner Mohamed Kamal as number one seeds.  Coming in at number two seeds are Bethany Churchill and her partner Antonio Mendes who was runner-up in the Boys U17 National Championship.

And finally, the “past” stars of the game look to continue their glory years by competing for National Titles in one of four age categories (40+, 50+, 55+ and 60+).  Players to watch include Lolly Gillen and Steven Hisey (both former Champions in this category) who have paired together to compete for the 60+ Title.  In the 55+ category, reigning champions Cathy Tuckwell and Robert Ferguson are back looking to repeat.  In the 50+ category, number one seeds Karen Arango and Joseph Purrazzella look to hold off a strong field for their first title.  And in the 40+ category, Scott Stoneburgh, who is a former Open Champion joins forces with Michele Ramsey.

“For the first year Calgary is set to host the 2019 Canadian Mixed Doubles Squash Championship presented by Microtel Inn and Suites by Wyndam,” said Tournament Co-Chair Jodie Nykoluk.  “Since our first meeting on June 22, 2018, we’ve been focused on hosting a world class event for the participants and the sponsors.  Thanks to all of the out of town players and all of the locals who’ve stepped up.  Your passion and commitment to squash never ceases to amaze me.”

Additionally, Tournament Co-Chair Kim Watson stated, “We also had an aggressive goal of raising $15,000 so that we could host an exceptional event and we exceeded that!  A huge thank you to all of those who continue to contribute to this great sport!  Without them, this weekend would not be possible.  Any additional funds leftover will be donated to Calgary Prairie Jesters so that they can continue to promote the support of junior squash and lifelong participation and development of squash-related activities.”
